An Expert's 60-Minute Party Strategy: Stress-Free Entertaining for Spontaneous Visitors
During the festive time, when there's a lot happening which the most vivacious people might sometimes look forward to a quiet break in January, it is all too easy to overlook details. I'm sure I cannot be the only one who's once felt jolted awake at my desk by a message from a friend wondering, "What time should we come us tonight?" Fear not; whether you are absent minded, or simply inclined toward last-minute gatherings, I have you covered.
The Golden Rule to Memorable Get-Togethers
First and foremost, and I cannot stress this enough, whether you have planned for months versus only 15 minutes, the most enjoyable events are the most straightforward. What anyone expects is pleasant conversation, a drink to drink, and sufficient food so guests don't feel like chewing their arm during the bus back. Unless you are Jay Gatsby, nobody anticipates professional bartending, fancy food and entertainers.
The most successful gatherings are the simplest. However, a concept helps to cover up the reality you've just thrown the party on while coming back from the office.
Selecting a Concept to Direct The Shopping
Nevertheless, an overarching idea can be useful to hide the fact you've just put this thing on while returning home from work. By concept, I mean for example the holidays. Getting a bit more specific (Swedish-style festivities, say, featuring spiced drink, aromatic cocktail, fish snacks and flatbreads, Nordic beats playlist; alternatively Mexican Christmas, with holiday punch, chilled brews or cocktails, and lots of corn chips, spicy sauce and green spread, and upbeat tunes on the stereo) helps direct the selection during the necessary grocery run.
Strategic Shopping for Your Gathering
In the store, pick a drink or two (one alcoholic if you drink, a non-alcoholic one in case some avoid alcohol) and a few snacks that match the style, then buy as much of them as you can afford, instead of stressing over providing a wide selection. No thing appears more welcoming and cheerful than plenty – I would always prefer to be welcomed with a container filled with iced containers of reasonably priced bubbly than a single glass with fancy bubbly. (Chuck in a few bags of ice, too; you'll find seldom plenty of ice.)
Drinks and Large-Batch Drinks Simplified
If you feel the need to impress and provide a special beverage, make sure to prepare ahead a large batch in a container so that you aren't stuck busying yourself with drinks while you should be socializing. Once the party begins, enlist a close friend or volunteer to watch the drinks and top up as necessary until it's finished. Follow suit for the non-alcoholic punch; people appreciate to be given a job at a party allowing them to enjoy some of positive vibes.
On the punch front, whichever formula you choose (they abound on the internet), skip anything too sweet – young ones present should have their own drinks – and if it's available, put a bottle of bitters within reach (refrain from putting them to the bowl as they're unsafe for individuals who avoid drinks altogether). Take care with presentation so that the alcohol-free drink doesn't seem like an afterthought; just spend a moment to add a few rounds of citrus to the punch.
Snacks That Work With Minimal Fuss
For me, I'd skip the readymade assortments of "party foods" available in shops during the holidays; they feel fancy, and usually require using the oven (should you go this route, be aware that everyone secretly prefers garlic bread and/or mini sausages anyway). I truly believe nothing beats a couple of really big containers of tasty snacks (plain salted is universally liked), plus, provided there are no allergies, some of those great-value packets of nuts often sold in the international aisle in stores, with perhaps a few pitted olives for color (you don't want to find stones in odd places in the future).
In case, similar to some, you think crisps substantial fare, a single large piece of good cheese on a board alongside crackers and some elegantly arranged fruit always looks visually appealing. A plate with some cured or cooked meats or fish laid out there (only one type, except if you have a large budget), alternatively a handsome pre-made tart, similar to available in specialty sections seasonally, is more filling, and you truly will succeed with artisanal slices of Italian bread, since they don't need additional preparation.
