Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
