Can You Solve This? That Forgotten Dutch Creation That Shaped the Contemporary World

One can find many candidates for the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.

As per a new book, though, that title belongs to a mechanised timber mill invented through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.

“Before automated cutting, building a simple merchant vessel necessitated approximately ten lumberjacks working for 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be manufactured within seven days.”

Thanks to this rapid automated cutter, that turned logs to planks using almost no manual labor, the Dutch were able to construct vessels more quickly compared to any other nation, which unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, financial as well as cultural supremacy across the continent and the globe.

The First True Manufacturing Device

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues Dávila, was “mankind’s initial true industrial machine.” A wind turbine turned a gear. One component transformed the rotary motion to vertical motion for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed the spinning movement into a sideway’s movement advancing the log to the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log ahead one precise increment per cycle.

“Each element was modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts in order that they operated in a precisely synchronized order, cutting on every downward stroke while moving on every upward stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of fundamental parts.”

Which brings us to the current challenge. I’d like for you to reimagine a key the basic concepts behind this historic invention.

Circular to Vertical

Construct a mechanism that turns rotary movement to up-and-down action. You have these items only: A spinning wheel. Two pins. Two bars. A “sleeve”, which is a tube or sleeve into which a single the bars can slide snugly. (Assume it is possible to mount components on a base, so that the components don’t fall down.)
