LA Faces Unprecedented Heat Just Days Following Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring significant rainfall that led to inundation across parts of the city, LA is now confronting unseasonably hot weather for late February.
Record-Setting Temperatures
By Friday afternoon, the mercury reached 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in downtown Los Angeles, per data from the National Weather Service. This breaks the prior high for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was established in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on forecast graphics for the region.
Safety Warnings
The weather service cautioned that Friday's weather posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice featured:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave kids or animals unattended in a car.
An Extreme Shift
This sharp rise in heat follows closely after a intense winter storm that battered the region last week. That storm unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to higher elevations, leading to flash flood warnings for countless residents.
Sadly, the severe weather also caused a deadly avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
Looking ahead some relief will arrive. Readings were forecast to drop to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in the city by overnight.
Additional areas that reached 90°F included Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Additionally, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were forecast to reach the upper eighties.
Over Saturday and Sunday, downtown LA can expect temperatures in the 80s, with cooler weather on tap for the week ahead.
