R360 Recruits Subject to Decade-Long Suspension from National Rugby League
The rugby star won 20 caps for the All Blacks before changing loyalty to the Samoan team.
Rugby league's governing body has declared that players who join the “breakaway” R360 will be barred for 10 years.
The new league, which plans to launch in 2026, is aiming to attract players from union and league with hefty contracts and a slimmed-down fixture list.
Prominent National Rugby League players have reportedly received offers by the new league, which will include six to eight men's sides and women's teams based in key urban centers around the world.
Representing Samoa the rugby star, who is with New Zealand Warriors in the league, has stated he has had negotiations involving R360.
Papenhuyzen, Lomax, Payne Haas and Jye Gray are also reported to be weighing up offers from the rebel league.
A group of union countries, among them Australia, recently announced a prohibition on R360 recruits playing test matches.
“We have consulted our franchises and we've acted decisively,” stated Australian Rugby League Commission chief V'Landys.
“Sadly, there will persistently exist groups that try to exploit our game for potential financial gain.
“They avoid funding in pathways or the development of athletes. They only leverage the hard work of others, endangering athletes of financial loss while gaining personally.
“Essentially, they are, imitating the sport.”
R360 is launched by ex-England star Mike Tindall and backed by private investors.
Following the possible rugby union sanctions were declared last week, it said: “We aim to collaborate together as a component of the global rugby calendar.
“The series is arranged with bespoke schedules for men's and women's teams and R360 will allow all athletes for international matches, as written into their deals.”
The new league will apply for endorsement for its proposals from the international authority, the sport's governing body, at its council meeting in the coming year.
