When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and natural ability won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Breakthrough

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to the title and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

At Monaco, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
