The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
