The people of Israel commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks proceed
Citizens have assembled across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.
The attack led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed official memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but events still took place around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the terms of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the talks revealed that an late session of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The source said the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He commented that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are striving to close the differences between the two sides.
Critical Issues in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies provision
- After-conflict governance of the area
Public Reaction
In the city's public square earlier, young a woman - whose family member endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until each abducted person return no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see all home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.
In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the families of the hostages. Israel states nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Activist a participant remarked: "We must do every compromise necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israelis desire the war to end in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of the music event, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli shelling carried on.
In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, sector and zone areas and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"When the evening comes, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, clinging, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had accepted the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the south region of the city said two more victims had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the southern area, health workers stated.
