UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman containing several human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with their own fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the main character navigating a abandoned church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms where their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
