Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.
